There is nothing more infuriating than swimming a grueling 1,500 meters only for your Apple Watch to log 1,100. Unlike other smartwatches, Apple offers zero post-swim calibration. If the data didn't record, you're usually out of luck.

After tearing my hair out over this exact issue, I finally cracked the code on why the watch drops laps and how to stop it. Depending on where you are in your swimming journey, here is my personal playbook for fixing it.

🌊 If You're New to Swimming (It's Probably Your Technique)

The sensors on the watch are incredibly sensitive to erratic movements. If your technique isn't totally smooth yet, the watch simply gets lost.

  • No mid-pool breaks: If you lose your breath and stand up in the middle of a length, the watch immediately halts its distance calculation.

  • Shorten your glide: Love the resting glide in breaststroke? Keep it under 3 seconds. Any longer, and the watch assumes you've stopped moving altogether.

  • Stay consistent: Don't mix kicks and pulls randomly. Find a steady rhythm and stick to it.

  • The wall is your friend: Never do a U-turn before the wall. You must physically tap the edge to register the lap.

🛠 If You're a Swim Vet (It's Definitely a Tech Glitch)

If you've been swimming for years with perfect form and the watch still cheats you out of laps, try these tech workarounds that saved my sanity:

  • The Nuclear Option (Unpair & Re-pair): It’s annoying, but unpairing the watch from your iPhone and pairing it again forces a total reset of the motion algorithms. This fixed the issue almost instantly for me.

  • The "Wrong Wrist" Illusion: Go into your Watch settings and change the orientation to "Right Wrist"—even if you continue wearing it on your left. Don't ask me why, but this bizarre hack works wonders.

  • Strap it down: A loose band lets water flow under the device and interfere with the sensors. Cinch it one notch tighter than you normally would.

  • Explosive push-offs: When you turn at the wall, give the screen a micro-second to update, then push off with maximum force to wake the sensors up for the next lap.
