Touching the wall may not be enough. If your Apple Watch misses pool lengths, try a clear, controlled push-off that accelerates you away from the wall.

Apple Watch uses its accelerometer and gyroscope to count pool laps. It detects movement rather than simply registering your hand touching the wall. Apple explains its swimming sensors here.

A distinct push-off may provide a clearer movement signal than touching the wall and drifting away slowly. It is a practical adjustment to test, rather than a guaranteed fix.

How to Push Off More Clearly

  1. Finish the length at the wall.
  2. Plant your feet and push away firmly, creating a noticeable change in speed.
  3. Glide in a streamlined position, then resume your normal stroke.

Use a comfortable, controlled push-off. You do not need maximum force or a flip turn.

Check Whether It Helps

Select Pool Swim, confirm the pool length, and manually count eight lengths. In a 25-meter pool, that should total 200 meters.

Use consistent push-offs throughout, then compare your count with the saved workout. Repeat the test before deciding whether the adjustment reduced missing distance.
