Apple Watch Swimming Accuracy: What Tests Show

“Swimming accuracy” is not a single measurement. Counting pool lengths, tracking open-water distance, estimating calories, and measuring heart rate are separate tasks—and evidence for one does not validate the others.
Pool Distance: Accurate Under Some Conditions, Not All
A 2024 study in Sensors included six swimmers and tested the first-generation Apple Watch SE in a 50 m pool, with three trials per watch and swimming protocol. Its distance readings were identical across the three repetitions of each test. 2024 study and data tables

Crucially, the last protocol involved changing strokes halfway down a 50 m pool, not swimming in a 25 m pool. The results identify a specific failure mode: mid-length stroke transitions. Conversely, three error-free trials under conventional conditions do not establish perfect everyday accuracy.
Counting Lengths Is Not the Same as Measuring Calories
A 2018 study tested Apple Watch Series 2 with 78 swimmers, comparing lap and stroke counts with manual observations and calorie estimates with respiratory gas analysis. Across swimming speeds, mean absolute percentage error ranged from 0.5–6.1% for laps and 6.2–9.3% for strokes, versus 17.1–151.7% for calories. Calorie accuracy generally improved at higher speeds but was poor at slow-to-moderate speeds. Reasonably accurate activity counts do not guarantee accurate energy-expenditure estimates. Those specific percentages describe Series 2, not newer models.
Open Water Requires Separate Evidence
In a 2021 DC Rainmaker field test, Apple Watch Series 6 recorded 760 m against a 690 m reference GPS track, a difference of approximately +10.1%. The implication is limited but useful: accurate pool counting does not, by itself, establish accurate open-water distance tracking.
What Remains Uncertain

Our reading of these findings: Apple Watch is useful for routine pool-training records, but its metrics deserve different levels of confidence. Cross-check distance after unusual sets, and treat calorie totals as estimates rather than precise measurements. Ask whether each metric is accurate enough for the swimming session you are reviewing.
