If your Apple Watch open water swim distance is wrong, check how much time your watch spends underwater—especially if you swim breaststroke. A submerged wrist can prevent reliable GPS reception. Giving the watch opportunities to come above the surface may help future recording; for a saved swim with an underestimated distance, SwimNow offers Open Water Distance Correction.

These address different stages of the problem: improving reception during the swim and reviewing the distance afterward. Neither should be treated as a guarantee of a perfect GPS track.

Why does breaststroke cause problems with open-water GPS?

During breaststroke, your hands and wrists usually stay below the surface through the pull and recovery. Even when your head is above water, the watch may remain submerged. Freestyle brings the wrist out of the water repeatedly during the arm recovery, giving it more opportunities to receive satellite signals.

Huawei’s technical support guidance explains that prolonged submersion, including during breaststroke, can prevent GPS reception and produce incomplete routes or incorrect distances. That document describes Huawei devices, but the underwater reception limitation is relevant to wrist-worn GPS generally.

For Apple Watch specifically, MySwimPro’s support documentation says freestyle gives the best results and breaststroke cannot be tracked reliably in open water. This is guidance from an Apple Watch app provider, not an Apple accuracy guarantee.

What should you try during your next swim?

  1. Choose Open Water Swim. Use the built-in Workout app for a lake or sea swim. A measured outdoor pool still calls for Pool Swim. See Apple’s swimming workout instructions.
  2. Give the watch a clear view of the sky before entering. Keep the watch above water while preparing to start. Do not begin with the wrist already submerged.
  3. When swimming breaststroke, try bringing the watch above the surface occasionally. After swimming for a while, use a comfortable, safe break to lift the watch-wearing wrist clear of the water. If you are comfortable swimming freestyle, a short section provides repeated opportunities for the wrist to emerge.
  4. Review the saved distance and route afterward. Note your stroke and any changes you tried, then compare similar sessions before deciding whether they helped.

Occasionally exposing the watch is a practical experiment based on the GPS reception limitation, not a validated Apple procedure. There is no supported universal rule such as “raise your wrist every 20 strokes” or “hold it up for five seconds.” A new position fix also cannot tell the watch the exact path you swam while reception was missing. Only try this when it is comfortable and safe; do not interrupt your breathing or balance to improve a recording.

Is every wrong distance a breaststroke problem?

No. First separate an underestimated total from a missing map, a visibly erratic route, or a workout that stopped early. They do not necessarily have the same cause.

What to check when an open-water swim looks wrong
What you seeWhat to check next
Much less distance than expected after breaststrokeConsider prolonged wrist submersion. Try the above-water experiment and review whether distance recording improves.
No route mapCheck location access for the app that recorded the workout. An imported workout can only display the route data made available to it.
More distance than expectedInspect the route for detours or implausible jumps. A course’s advertised distance is not necessarily the exact path you swam.
Both time and distance stop earlyCheck for an interrupted workout using our recording-stopped guide.

If the problem persists during ordinary freestyle as well, keep the workout details, watch model, software version and route screenshot for support. Do not assume that every discrepancy is caused by your technique.

Can SwimNow correct an underestimated open-water distance?

SwimNow includes Open Water Distance Correction. Record your swim with Apple Watch’s built-in Workout app, then review the saved session in SwimNow on your iPhone through Apple Health. You do not need a separate SwimNow watch app. For an underestimated open-water session, use the Distance Correction feature and compare the result with a credible distance reference.

The SwimNow website shows a concrete example: in a 1,000 m race, Apple Fitness recorded 115 m; after SwimNow Distance Correction, the result was 924 m.

SwimNow’s published 1,000 m race example
RecordDistance
Race distance1,000 m
Apple Fitness before correction115 m
SwimNow after correction924 m
Apple Fitness open-water workout showing 115 metres before correction
Before correction: the 115 m recording shown on the SwimNow website.
SwimNow open-water workout showing 924 metres after distance correction
After correction: 924 m for the same published example.

The corrected result is much closer to the race distance, but still 76 m short. This is one published example, not an independent validation study or a promised result for every swim.

Distance correction should not be confused with recovering missing GPS coordinates. The public feature description does not establish that correction reconstructs the actual route or writes a corrected workout back to Apple Health, so we do not claim either here.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Apple Watch accurate in the pool but wrong in open water?

Pool Swim uses the pool length you enter as a distance reference. Open-water tracking depends on a different recording environment, including GPS reception. Reliable pool counting does not establish reliable open-water distance. Our Apple Watch swimming accuracy review separates the evidence for these metrics.

Will raising my wrist recover the distance already missed?

Not necessarily. It may help the watch obtain another position, but that point does not reveal the full route taken since the previous fix. Treat it as a reception experiment, not a way to restore missing track data.

Should I switch to Pool Swim when swimming breaststroke in a lake?

No. A lake does not provide repeated, fixed pool lengths. Keep the workout type appropriate to the environment and address the reception issue separately.

Does SwimNow improve GPS reception while I swim?

The feature discussed here corrects the distance of a saved open-water swim. It does not keep the watch connected to GPS underwater. Use the during-swim checks for recording, then review the result afterward.
